I'm curious what the long-term plan is here behind charging for verified accounts. Musk has repeatedly mentioned wanting to remove bots from Twitter. If that's the case, why not have a verification system for everyone? Make a super cheap, one-time cost for one tier, then an upper-tier one for high-status users. Sort of like Michael Saylor's idea of having an orange tick for basic accounts, and blue for status accounts.
As far as paying for a tick period, if it gave my account reach or access to worthwhile content and people that it wouldn't otherwise, and "paid for itself" in terms of networking opportunities or something, then yes, I'd pay for it. But it would have to be like Medium, where paying for a sub lets me read a lot of great articles. Since my earnings on here pay many times more than the monthly cost, it's worth it.
I really don't get Musk's goal here. There's no way charging for blue ticks would make enough to be worthwhile. And $20 is ridiculously high. I can get two or three streaming services for that.
